About the course

This qualification reflects the role of builders, site managers and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses who apply knowledge of structural principles, codes, standards and legal requirements to Class 1 and 10, to a maximum of two storeys and Class 2 to 9 Type C constructions, and who plan and supervise safe building and construction work, prepare and administer contracts, and who apply quality principles to building and construction projects.

Building relates to construction and Site Management is about managing the factors around construction, such as the deployment of crews with specialised skills (including builders), product compliance, deployment of contract specialised skills, weather and site location.

Occupational titles depending on packaging options selected may include:

  • Builder
  • Construction Supervisor
  • Site Manager
  • Site Supervisor
  • Leading Hand


The qualification is designed to enable two specialised occupational outcome pathways depending on elective options which will be reflected as:

  • Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) or
  • Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Site Management)


Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.

Builder and Site Supervisor licensing varies across States and Territories and requirements additional to the attainment of this qualification may be required.

Nineteen (19) units including eleven (11) core units and eight (8) elective units are required for the award of the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building).

The 19 units that must be completed include:

  • 11 core units
  • 8 elective units.


To achieve the occupational outcome of Builder, electives must include:

  • All Group A elective units
  • Up to two elective units from either Group B or general electives
  • One elective unit may be from any training package or accredited course as long as it ensures the integrity of the qualification’s Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) alignment and contributes to a valid, industry supported vocational outcome.

This program is delivered in the classroom, in a live building site and through scheduled and supervised online learning.

Perth:

This qualification will be delivered over 52 weeks, including 40 weeks of training and assessment spread over 4 terms of 10 weeks each and 12 weeks of holidays.

The Wales Institute has the following entry requirements:

International students must:

  • be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent
  • participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs. The course entry interview will also assess whether students can use digital technologies.
  • have an IELTS* score of 6.0 (test results must be no more than 2 years old). English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
    • Educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
    • successful completion of an English Placement Test at IELTS level 6.0.

*Note that other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL can be accepted. Students are required to provide their results so that it can be confirmed they are equivalent to IELTS 6.0.

Delivery and assessment summary

The qualification is delivered over 52 weeks comprising of:
  • four (4) terms of 10 weeks each (40 weeks total)
  • holiday breaks amounting to 12 weeks (as specified in the timetable).

Delivery and assessment details

Students are required to attend 14 hours of training and assessment per week and complete 6 hours of scheduled, structured and supervised online learning and assessment (where applicable) per week.

Additional, unsupervised study is expected to be approximately 5 hours a week.

The training and assessment schedule shows the weeks during which training is delivered and assessment conducted for each unit.

Potential employment options are in building roles including residential and commercial with the following limitations:
  • Residential construction limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.
  • Commercial construction limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.

Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) or a range of Diploma qualifications, as well as higher education qualifications in building and construction.

Fees: $15,000

Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge, and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of RPL and/or credit transfer may affect course fees as well as the duration of the course.

Entry Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or above before commencement of study at At The Wales Institute.
  • Successful completion of Year 12, equivalent (Higher Secondary Certificate/ vocational higher secondary certificate (Minimum CGPA is 3.5 or 60% in HSC/First Division pass) GCE A-Level or higher qualification).
  • At The Wales Institute may also accept you in this course if you have any other relevant qualifications, certifications, and/or experience;
  • A minimum overall score of 6 is required for candidates with IELTS with a minimum score of 5.5 in each band or a minimum PTE score of 52 is required.
